Every little helps as Tesco extends online service

NEWS UK supermarket chain, Tesco, is extending the reach of its existing Internet home-delivery service to over 100 stores nationwide. The service has been in operation for two and a half years in 10 London stores and one store in Leeds. During that period, time was spent ironing out any problems within the system. A spokesman for Tesco explained to Silicon.com how the project works. "With the use of Team Pad trolleys from ICL, orders can be placed via the Web with a read-out appearing on a LCD screen located on the trolley. This then advises the assistant collecting the goods as to the quickest and easiest route to take around the store." He added that telephone and fax orders had been dropped because there are less popular than online orders. "Orders taken will be delivered the next day with a choice of half hour intervals," he said. The move will also see the supermarket chain create 1,500 jobs and make a major investment into Siemens PCs for sale on its shelves. "This way of shopping has a lot of potential but it will never replace stores - that's not the intention," he concluded.
