Apple opens up Quicktime to developers

By John Oates, 20 April 1999 00:20

NEWS Apple Computer looks set to open up the source code of its multimedia software Quicktime to help combat competition from Microsoft's Windows Media Player and Real Networks' RealPlayer. According to US reports, the company hopes the move will win over the increasing number of open source supporters and get them developing and improving the software. It will only apply to the server software. But open source developer sites and forums were less than enthusiastic about the rumours. Some users posted comments doubting Apple's motives in publishing the code. Full details are expected to be announced at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas this week.
