NEWS Clarent has begun trials of a messaging service that runs on a voice over Internet protocol network (VoIP). It has joined Swedish Telco, Telia, and German telecoms provider, Poptel, to demonstrate a universal messaging service - initially incorporating voice and fax - which can be accessed around the world at local call rates. Two companies in the UK have begun trials of the services. Chris Haslam, marketing director at Clarent, said the firms "are piloting with intention to have the full universal messaging platform when it's available". Haslam explained the full service would eventually incorporate email, voice and fax on a messaging service based on IP that could be accessed by either computer or phone.
