PSINet invests in Docklands project

NEWS PSINet is investing £30m in a Web-hosting service based in London's Docklands. The development is aimed at customers who need Internet services but don't want to invest in staff and hardware. The nine-floor building has room for 4,000 racks - each capable of holding 20 servers. It has three separate feeds from the National Grid and three back-up generators. Valerie Holt, vice president for PSINet Europe, said: "This is the second stage of Internet access - a move towards complicated, sophisticated and integrated services. It is not just about bits and bobs but providing what customers want moving into the 21st century." James Gardiner, deputy managing director at Redbus Interhouse - which launched a similar service, also based in Docklands, at the beginning of the month - said: "We looked at the market when we launched and we weren't the first in. You need flexibility and independence because if you host your site at the ISP (Internet service provider) and you need to move it for some reason it is a big job. And if your site is an ecommerce site that can mean a big loss." Gardiner also claimed that by offering monthly billing for customers and access to several ISPs, Interhouse offered business more choice.
