Congressional panel to explore Net tax issue

NEWS A Congressional panel is meeting today in New York to discuss Internet taxation in the US. The meeting is the first gathering of top industry and government figures since the body was founded last year. The panel includes AT&T Chairman, C. Michael Armstrong, and MCI World, vice chairman, John Sidgmore. It's faced with the task of finding a way to raise tax revenues from the Internet before the three-year moratorium on Web taxation, announced in October, expires. The Congressional meeting comes at a time when top US officials are calling for a light touch in Internet government. US Commerce Secretary, William Daley, on Monday called for the moratorium to be extended, while Deputy Secretary Robert Mallett said at a UN event in New York, that keeping bureaucracy to a minimum is a priority.
