NEWS 3Com has fleshed out its wireless networking strategy, a strategy that now includes migration products and services for future 3G (third generation) mobile network operators. Speaking at Telecom 99 in Geneva, 3Com chairman and CEO Eric Benhamou outlined the importance of 'user-centric networking', and placed the 3G push within that context. He said: "The essence of 3Com is making connections, and with people wanting simplicity, those companies that succeed will be doing specialist devices well." With that in mind, 3Com is working towards network products for 3G CDMA wireless data infrastructure, and 2.5G GSM networks enhanced using technologies such as GPRS. These technologies will allow fast data rates (potentially up to 2Mbps) to mobile information appliances. Although 3Com's expertise in this area is with CDMA cellular and PCS operators such as Sprint PCS, the company claims it will be able to supply GSM operators upgrading or building out new networks. Irfan Ali, senior VP and general manager, 3Com Carrier Systems, said: "I don't think the two environments are as far apart as we sometimes think." Ali also reiterated the company's carrier strategy of helping the largest operators build and deploy networks with IP at their heart - a protocol that 3Com thinks will only help it deliver equipment for different types of network.
