NEWS BT is to expand deployment of IP on its UK network to cut the cost of Internet access for ISP and their customers. It will increase the number of IP points of presence from 14 to 103, and it will deploy 100,000 IP dial ports in the local exchanges by April next year, with another 100,000 planned by September 2000. Using IP to route Internet traffic rather than the circuit switched PSTN increases speed of the network and it will significantly reduce the cost of traffic from ISPs, as calls can be charged on a capacity basis rather than a per minute basis, according to BT. The move is in line with tariff changes announced by the company last week.
