BT and Energis poised to clash over lottery bid

NEWS BT today played down speculation that it is looking to partner Richard Branson's Lottery Consortium in a bid for the next National Lottery licence. A BT spokesman branded reports that it is fighting rival, Energis, for a place on the consortium as being "highly speculative". Reports in the Sunday newspapers asserted that both companies have been courting Branson in an attempt to gain the potentially lucrative IT services side of the lottery licence. Last week the lottery regulator announced that the new bidders for the licence would have to replace all of the point-of-sale terminals, opening up a potential £100m contract to the licence winner. At present Racal Telecom provides the IT backup for the National Lottery, and has reportedly earned £80m from the deal since 1994. Energis declined to comment on the matter.
