Oftel revises charges for Web access

NEWS Oftel has set out revised pricing arrangements for Internet access using NTS (Number Translation Services) that it hopes will result in greatly reduced charges. From January 2000 Internet calls will be split into two parts - an initial charge for setting up the call and a separate charge for maintaining it. This will enable ISPs to set their own pence-per-minute rates. New numbering arrangements will also be initiated, including a 0844 number specifically for Internet access, as well as a 0808 for free and unmetered Internet services. Oftel, before Christmas, will set the amount BT can charge for setting up the call. It has urged ISPs to advise BT what retail pricing they will use, so the UK telco can make necessary arrangements with its billing systems.
