Ad revenues bring free DSL to the US

NEWS US-based freedsl.com is set to offer American consumers free DSL-based Internet access funded exclusively by advertising. The company is currently receiving registrations through its Web site for what is described as a 'Spring 2000' launch. Customers who refer ten other people to sign up will also receive a free DSL modem. There will be no charge for the high-speed access which will be paid for by revenue from advertising. The browser used on the network includes a permanently visible advertising banner. Customers also have to provide some personal information so adverts can be tailored. In the UK BT is expected to charge ISPs about £40 a month for DSL access when it launches later this year. For more information see http://www.freedsl.com
