Channel 4 to quadruple Internet spending

NEWS Channel 4 is to increase its Internet spending fourfold in order to fund six online businesses over the next 12 months. The company refused to disclose exact figures, but said the ventures will include an entertainment portal, a film site and a gay lifestyle site. The money will also be used for a complete overhaul of the Channel 4's current Web site. Andy Anson, who will head the development of the businesses, said Channel 4 has a lot to offer the online world given its experience of innovation and creativity in the broadcasting world. Meanwhile, Sophie Walpole, who previously headed the Interactive Services department, will become managing editor for the entertainment and sports sites. Steve Keane will become head of interactive commissioning.
