Somerset Council gets £4.3m CWC network

NEWS Somerset County Council has signed a £4.3m contract with Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) to link the IT systems in over 100 government buildings. Under the SomerNet Project - in line with Tony Blair's vision of 'joined-up government' - the council's communications will be upgraded using an IP-based (Internet Protocol) infrastructure. Wireless technology will also be used to link 76 of the buildings. Somerset County Council said the CWC wireless option was better value for money than a cable-based network, while still secure. CWC said SomerNet could potentially save the council £1.6m over five years. CWC has worked with Wireless LANs Ltd to provide the network, which connects four main sites at Bridgwater, Frome, Taunton and Yeovil, using a switched 34Mbps ATM core. The wireless technology will connect back to the core at up to 10Mbps. Where line-of-sight connections are not practical, leased lines will link the council's other 25 sites to the core at 2Mbps.
