Byers muses over NTL bid for Cable & Wireless

NEWS The DTI is currently considering a report completed by the Competition Commission, previously the Monopolies and Mergers Commission, on Friday that examines NTL's proposed buyout of Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC). Industry speculation suggests that the £8.2bn deal, announced in July last year, has been given the green light by the Commission. Trade secretary Stephen Byers now has four weeks to decide if the deal should be allowed to go through. NTL's purchase of CWC was a blow to Telewest, the UK's other major cable operator, which was frozen out of last stage negotiations weeks before the NTL agreement was made.
