NEWS UK mobile operator Vodafone AirTouch has received conditional clearance from the EU for the $180bn acquisition of German company Mannesmann. Under the terms of the award, the company will have to fulfil a number of requirements before the deal is given complete clearance, creating the largest telco in Europe. Vodafone will have to sell Orange, the UK mobile operator bought by Mannesmann last year, and will also have to allow other mobile phone companies to use the Vodafone/Mannesmann network for a three-year period. The EU said it had received a number of complaints from competitors, but said it would be impossible for them to offer a European service without access to the Vodafone/Mannesmann network.
