NEWS Pre-paid cards for shopping on the Net are to be launched in the UK this summer. The cards, modelled on pre-paid mobile phone cards, will be used in conjunction with a pin number to shop online. The system, which will allow customers to shop online without disclosing their credit card details, is the brainchild of Internet payment specialists, Global Internet Billing (GIB). GIB, a spin-off of pan-European telecommunications group Interoute, has already signed an agreement to distribute the cards through the network of 20,000 independent retailers Interoute uses for its phone cards. The company is also negotiating with retail Web sites to produce branded versions of the card, which should be on sale within three months. GIB already provide various payment services for online consumers including software to enable adult Web sites to convert local rate Internet calls to premium rate calls.
