NEWS Swedish telecom operator Telia and Dutch carrier KPN have signed a E90m (£56m) deal with Alcatel's ADSL unit to help the rollout of their high-speed Internet access services. Alcatel will provide KPN with 26,000 ADSL SpeedTouch modems for residential users and SpeedTouch Pro modems for professional users. The Dutch carrier will roll out ADSL as part of its MXstream Internet service it offers with ISPs Euronet Internet, lanet Internet, Sonera, World Online and XS4all. KPN plans to launch these services during the summer in the Netherlands. The company predicted it would have 100,000 ADSL lines installed by 2001 and between 300,000 to 500,000 by 2002. Telia refused to comment on the nature of their deal with Alcatel but said it involved "hundreds of thousands" of modems. Ingmar Jonsson, manager for Telia's broadband project, said demand in Sweden for high-speed Internet access was booming.
