NEWS AltaVista will launch its free "Internet Access" service on 30 June, following the fanfare announcement of the service in March. The service will cost £51 for a one-off subscription, and free thereafter. The announcement coincides with the company's endorsement of Oftel's ruling that BT must offer flat rate Internet access wholesale to telcos. AltaVista said the ruling is the beginning of a new era of flat-rate Internet access for UK users, adding the move will shift competition away from price toward quality of service. The service launch also comes as newspaper reports claim the company is planning to sell off its European business as a separate entity on the London or Frankfurt exchange. The Sunday Times yesterday valued the deal at $900m.
