Charges of monopoly threaten Sprint-MCI WorldCom merger

NEWS The $115m merger between MCI WorldCom and Sprint could be blocked in the coming weeks by the European Commission (EC) and the US Department of Justice, according to reports in the Washington Post. The two combined powers would have a monopoly in the internet infrastructure market and will have to wait until the EC makes its decision on 12 July. The Commission has urged MCI WorldCom to dispose of UUnet, its internet unit, but MCI said it would rather hold on to it and sell off similar sections of Sprint.
