NEWS French audio-visual regulator CSA has launched an investigation into the $34bn purchase of Universal studio owner Seagram by French media conglomerate Vivendi. Herve Bourges, president of the CSA, said he had concerns about the future commercial and editorial independence of the Vivendi-owned television station CanalPlus. Bourges said he had not been satisfied by verbal promises or assurances made by Vivendi. But Vivendi dismissed the investigation as a normal procedure. A Vivendi spokesman explained: "Deals of this size are always investigated - it's part of the CSA's job to look at this. We are also under investigation by US, Canadian and European regulatory powers. We will answer all the questions they ask and hope we can complete the deal soon."
