NEWS The winners of the 3G auction may not recoup their £22.5bn investment due to the lack of demand from consumers for mobile internet services, according to research commissioned by the Smith Group. Conducted by ICM Research on behalf of the ecommerce consulting group, the results show that only 22 per cent of mobile phone and internet users will access the web via a handset. The research shows that the 3G winners would need at least 70 per cent penetration for mobile internet service to recoup their investment. But the survey questioned 1,000 UK residents and found only 22 per cent would use mobile internet services.
