NEWS Canada-based Nortel Networks and optical fibre company Corning could be set to merge following rumours the companies are in talks. The potential $100bn merger would see Nortel integrating its optical components division with Corning as part of a stock share deal that would leave the Canadian firm with a 60 per cent stake in the optical fibre company. According to reports in the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times the negotiations could be completed within the next two weeks. Nortel refused to comment.
