Sky dumps analogue 18 months early as digital takes off

By Ian Jones, 25 July 2000 08:54

NEWS BSkyB is to cease transmitting analogue satellite TV signals more than one and a half years sooner than previously expected. According to reports in the Financial Times, the decision will be announced tomorrow, and follows the rapid take up of digital technology. On June 30, BSkyB's digital subscribers numbered 3.65m, compared to 4.5m using analogue. Switching off the analogue service is now slated for the end of 2002, and reportedly could save BSkyB £60m in transmission costs. However, the company could also incur a £30m penalty fee with satellite group SES-Astra for early termination of contracts.
