Deutsche Telekom backs out of Italian 3G auction

NEWS Deutsche Telekom (DT) has lost its place in the Italian third generation (3G) licence auctions to a Hong Kong-based conglomerate, according to reports in the FT. Hutchison Whampoa and the German telco have been battling for a stake in Andala - a consortium led by Italian telecoms provider Tiscali - which is planning to bid for one of five licences in Europe's largest mobile phone market. Sources close to the situation have reportedly said Hutchison Whampoa has all but won the partnership. It represents another set-back for DT's efforts to break into the Italian market after it was ousted from a joint venture with France Telecom and Italian utility Enel following last year. Tiscali is expected to formally announce its partnership choice on Monday.
