NEWS UK internet service provider CallNet is scrapping its unmetered access service just weeks after LineOne and VirginNet pulled the plug on their unmetered offerings. The company said its CallNet0800 service was no longer viable and will terminate its use on 5 September, replacing it with a charged service. According to a statement, the move is a reaction to prevailing market forces and the changes in preferences of UK internet users. Instead users will be charged 1p per minute of-peak and 2p per minute peak time. Existing 0800 users will be able to sign up for the new service without paying the £9.99 joining fee. The ISP joins the growing number of companies unwilling to support the heavy use of free services.
