Orange speeds up mobile internet access

NEWS Orange has launched a high-speed data service which promises mobile internet access at the speed of a desktop computer. The service is based on an enhanced version of Europe's GSM standard, called HSCSD (high-speed circuit switched data). It triples Web access speeds from 9.6 kbps to 28.8 kbps. A spokesman said Orange was the first UK mobile operator to introduce HSCSD, although the technology is available on the continent, and worldwide. "We have the network capacity to offer this, and the business customers to offer it to," he said. He added that the technology guaranteed a steady bandwidth, making it suitable for corporate video and audio broadcasts. Orange will launch a follow-up service, known as GPRS (general packet radio service) by the end of the year. GPRS - which does not guarantee steady bandwidth - will be aimed at consumers accessing the web from their WAP phones. This week's HSCSD service is accessible via a credit card sized adaptor, priced £299.
