BT talks mergers with AT&T

NEWS BT is involved in merger talks with US telco AT&T, according to speculation in The Wall Street Journal. The report suggests Sir Peter Bonfield, CEO of BT, has been holding talks with Michael Armstrong, CEO at AT&T, over the past month to discuss how a tie up would work. The two companies are already partners in the Concert alliance, which provides telecoms services to multinationals, and this is not the first time speculation over merger talks arisen. However, BT's future looks increasingly uncertain with a falling share price fuelling moves to spin off divisions within the company. A merger with AT&T would put it in a far stronger position to compete with European counterparts Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom.
