NEWS MP3.com has agreed to pay Sony Music Entertainment $20m in damages after the two companies settled their copyright case out of court late yesterday. The deal compensates Sony for all past revenue losses due to music being disseminated via MP3.com's website. It also gives MP3.com the right to distribute music by any Sony artist in the future, but it will now have to pay royalties whenever a user downloads a song, or uploads music onto the site. In spite of the settlement, the judge has ruled that there are still outstanding issues which need to be cleared up in court, with the next session set for 28 August. MP3.com is believed to have set aside $150m for legal settlements with music companies, and has already made similar deals with Bertelsmann, EMI and Time-Warner.
