NEWS Alcatel has set its sights on building 15 per cent of all European UMTS infrastructure. Serge Tchuruk, chief executive at Alcatel, said the company was ready to take on Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson and that it already funding for a number of equipment deals with the winners of UMTS licences. However, he admitted the company had an uphill struggle estimating Alcatel held only eight to per cent of the GMS infrastructure market. "Alcatel is far behind Ericsson and Nokia in the mobile sector," he said. "Our biggest competition in the optical networking market comes from Nortel and Lucent."
