NEWS UK internet users trail far behind their German counterparts in awareness of WAP technology but are nonetheless just as likely to purchase a WAP phone. A survey conducted by internet advertising group Adlink found that while most UK internet users have heard the term WAP, 46 per cent of them do not yet comprehend the technology. In contrast, 84 per cent of German internet users claim an understanding of WAP, thanks to an earlier marketing campaign. 22 per cent of UK and 26 per cent of German users plan to buy a WAP phone. Hans Jurgen Sonnenberg, European MD for Adlink, attributed the high interest among UK users to the novelty value of new technology. He said consumer interest in Germany, where WAP should have benefited from a six-month head start, has been tempered by supply and distribution difficulties.
