German flat-rate offering axed by Sonne

Sonne, a subsidiary of Dutch ISP Versatel, yesterday put an end to its unmetered access offer, which launched for the German market in May.

NEWS The service had more than 50,000 users but Sonne proved poorly prepared for the extensive time users spent surfing the web under the current anti-competitive regulations. "Deutsche Telekom can do whatever it wants," said Sabines Kies of Versatel. "The regulation office is blocking any kind of competition. In other countries, you have rules to prevent that. In the Netherlands, for example, regulation is opening up the market." Investigations were initiated against Deutsche Telekom a week ago, but Kies was unable to confirm rumours that smaller ISPs are planning an alliance to challenge the giant in court.
