Eurocrats force BT's hand over local loop

The European Union Parliament has voted to unbundle the local loop in all member countries by 1 January 2001.

NEWS The legislation has been passed just three months after the European Commission made the proposals in July. Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for enterprise and information society, and the man behind the moves, said in a statement: "The unprecedented speed by which this proposal has been agreed by all member states and the Parliament demonstrates the importance of this for Europe. The EU has demonstrated that it can move at internet speed." UK telco regulator Oftel welcomed the changes and claimed a major role in achieving them.
