Morning Edition: LSE Cruickshanked, Motorola gets secure and Boxman v2.0

Don Cruickshank, chairman of the London Stock Exchange, has cast fresh doubts over the prospect of a merger with a competitor unless there are dramatic reappraisals of the way exchanges are governed and valued.

NEWS According to the Financial Times, Cruickshank made the comments in a speech to the Securities Institute yesterday, two days before Sweden's OM Group is to make any final alterations to its proposed takeover of the LSE. Cruickshank also used the occasion to take a swipe at how rival exchanges are run. He claimed there is generally a lack of market discipline, and no realistic basis for making comparitive valuations. Many bourses operate clearing and settlement units, and that artificially inflates their value, he added. Also in the FT, Motorola is going to start pre-loading its mobile phones with internet security technology from Baltimore. The move is intended to tackle growing fears among consumers that mobile phones are not safe to use for online shopping or banking. Meanwhile, the dot-com supplement of the Telegraph homes in on the founder of online music store Boxman.com, which collapsed earlier this week. Bill Odqvist, a former record shop owner from Sweden, started Boxman.com back in 1997, but left in December 1999. Now though, he's decided to step in to buy the URL and the company's 750,000 customer database, and plans to relaunch as soon as possible. Odqvist claims the company collapsed because IBM failed to deliver bug-free versions of the software behind the site in time, and the technology was far too complex. He says the relaunch will be done far more simply, and with closer relationships with suppliers.
