NEWS The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulation 2000 will give shoppers a seven-day cooling off period, during which they can return goods for any reason and receive a full refund. E-tailers will also have to deliver goods within 30 days, and consumers will be exempt from any costs if a credit card is used fraudulently. Currently consumers are liable for the first £50 of debt incurred from fraudulent card use. The regulations are based on a 1997 EU directive on consumer protection. The EU deadline for implementing the regulations was June 2000, but the DTI said the four-month delay was necessary to include the results of industry and consumer group consultations.
