Last 'indie' cable operator lost in Telewest takeover

Cable giant Telewest has acquired Eurobell today for £280m.

By Julian Goldsmith, 2 November 2000 13:23

NEWS The deal marks the end of the last independent cable operator in the UK. Telewest had to rely on a loan from Deutsche Telekom to finance the deal. In return, Deutsche Telekom will gain a five per cent equity in the cable company by 2003. Eurobell runs a cable backbone from Cornwall to London. However, Telewest is thought to be more interested in Eurobell's franchise at Gatwick Airport, over which it already has control.
