Energis results show strong growth

Telecommunications and internet group Energis has reported strong interim results, fuelled by demand for internet telecoms services from large corporate clients.

NEWS Nearly 40 per cent of the group's turnover came from the sale of internet services, and its Internet-hosted business sites more than tripled to 16,500 during the year. Total turnover was up 81 per cent to £368m, with UK turnover up 54 per cent to £306.1m. The group showed a pre-tax profit for the first time: £9.5m profit compared with a £1.2m loss for the same period last year. Group operating loss was £10.5m, with a £20.3m operating profit in the UK. The group expanded its international presence during the year with the acquisition of pan-European carrier Unisource Carrier Services, giving it a foothold in Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and Poland. It will shortly be opening data centres in Switzerland and Warsaw. It also entered the mobile communications market via a virtual network operator deal with Orange. By Candice Goodwin
