Chain reaction: Retailers unite in growing numbers

The Worldwide Retail Exchange (WWRE), a B2B trading hub for retail chains, has signed up 11 new members, bringing total membership to 53.

NEWS New members include Italian chain Coop Italia, French department store group Galeries Lafayette and retail giant Toys R Us. Existing UK members include Tesco, Safeway, John Lewis, Boots and Marks & Spencer. The WWRE provides a global online e-procurement service through which retailers can source supplies from over 100,000 suppliers and distributors. The marketplace, which began trading in August, already handles sales of $722bn. A US-based corporate headquarters is due to open in January 2001.
