Madonna hits a high note with live webcast

The live webcast of popstar Madonna's first UK gig in seven years received a record-breaking internet audience of nine million last night.

NEWS The webcast, arranged in an exclusive deal with Microsoft's MSN, received three times the hits of ex-Beatle Paul McCartney's live Cavern gig last year. Madonna, who appeared on stage for only 30 minutes singing just six songs, reportedly turned down offers of up to £10m from TV networks anxious to get the concert broadcast. MSN spent £30m promoting the webcast, which could be accessed free of charge, and used 21 cameras to film the event.
