French regulator rules on unbundling

French telecom regulator ART has ordered France Telecom to reveal details that will help rivals prepare for the unbundling of the local loop in January 2001.

NEWS In a statement, ART instructed the French incumbent telco to comply with an obligation to provide alternative opportunities with the necessary technical information to optimise use of the last line of telephone cable linking. France Telecom's rivals have in the past criticised the refusal of the telco to reveal its plans for freeing up the last mile of the local loop, thus enabling competitors to plan future local services. However, the telco recently published a catalogue of local line rentals rejected by its competitors and the government as too high. France Telecom refused to comment.
