BBC commercial units go under the lens

The UK Government has launched an inquiry into the BBC's online advertising.

NEWS Chris Smith, the culture secretary, has appointed a watchdog to investigate whether the BBC is competing fairly with the online information sector and using licence fee-payers' money to subsidise the web adverts. The move follows British Internet Publishers' Alliance (BIPA) calls on the Department of Trade and Industry last November to oppose any attempt by the BBC to put adverts on its publicly funded websites.
