NEWS Talks between the two, which centred on Amazon taking responsibility for Wal-Mart's internet business in exchange for exposure in the company's 4,500 stores, are believed to have been purely exploratory. The idea that a link-up would be achieved within two months has been blown out of the water by reports that negotiations are no longer ongoing. Shares in Amazon have fluctuated wildly at the prospect of a positive business move by the company and the news sent a wave of disappointment through Nasdaq Amazon has already cut its revenue forecast for 2001 by 20 to 30 per cent from expectations of $4bn. It already has an alliance with 'bricks and mortar' company Toys R Us and recently reported that it would be willing to consider negotiations with any company. Wal-Mart has announced in the past that it would not be interested in acquiring Amazon as a whole, but would consider asset stripping should the company go belly up.
