NEWS Eutelsat's current fleet of 18 satellites covers Europe, large parts of Africa and the Middle East and links up with the US. About 56 per cent of the capacity is currently used for television broadcasts, and over 40 per cent for digital data communications such as fast internet access or 'always-on' web connections. Giuliano Berretta, director general of Eutelsat, said he plans to use the new satellites to help the company gain entry to new geographical markets, strategic partnerships and alliances with other satellite operators and content providers. The satellite operator is also setting up multimedia applications and digital television services. by Konrad Buck, reporter, silicon.de
