NEWS The government's move comes despite criticism from within its ranks that calls such action unworkable with one state Premier saying the scheme is destined to fail. Richard Alston, communications minister, believes it is time Australia acted to shake off its reputation of a nation of gamblers. He said in a statement: "Australia's status as one of the world's leading gambling nations demands that we take decisive action." However, Steve Bracks, Premier for the state of Victoria, said he appreciates the intentions of the federal government but does not support it because he believes the legislation "won't work" as it will be impossible to prevent people turning to offshore gambling. Official figures show that 80 per cent of eligible Australians gamble once a year and 40 per cent gamble regularly.
