Europe boosted by tech surge

A range of good news greeted the European markets this morning, providing an initial boost. The FTSE 100 was up half a percentage point while the TechMark gained 0.4 per cent.

NEWS German chip company Infineon saw its price edge upwards by almost three per cent following news that it beat second quarter estimates. Ericsson closed down the rumour mill today by confirming its joint mobile venture with Sony. In Sweden, the troubled mobile equipment manufacturer gained almost 5.5 per cent during early trading. Overnight, Compaq was left licking its wounds after a fall in profits for its first quarter - bad news for the PC giant that recently lost its number one crown to rival Dell.
