Orange sweetens France Telecom's results

Orange has defied the gloomy climate surrounding the mobile telecoms business, turning in a strong profit to brighten up France Telecom's results.

NEWS Orange sales more than doubled, to E3.4bn for the quarter, contributing to a 36.5 per cent growth in revenue for the former French state telco. France Telecom's internet service provider Wanadoo, which took over Freeserve earlier this year, also had a good quarter, reporting a 57.6 per cent rise in revenue to E290m. The results were broadly in line with expectations, and France Telecom shares rose in early trading. They later reversed their gains and fell below yesterday's close.
