Election online: Click finger on the political pulse?

If anyone doubted that UK political parties had their fingers on the pulse of ebusiness, faith will be restored today by taking a brief survey of their websites.

NEWS Internet-savvy politicos are being very generous in the apportioning of their valuable party URLs to competitors and spoof sites. A quick check of www.newlabour.co.uk will send you to the official Tory Party site, inviting surfers to "wait while we redirect you to common sense" as they pause for the page to load. The Tories are being similarly altruistic, with http://www.toryparty.co.uk leading you to the Socialist Workers Party (who probably have about as much chance as the Conservatives of getting elected). The Liberal Democrats are content for their site http://www.lib-dems.com to "counter misleading information put out by the Liberal Democrats". Some say democracy is dead in this country, suffering low turn-outs and voter apathy. It is therefore gratifying to see that all the main parties are so committed to the electoral process that they make a point of directing web users away from their own messages, so voters can be informed of all different angles. UK brand management company NetNames, which has pointed out the parties' surprising altruism, says politicians are all trying to impress us and win our votes - how cynical! This, more honest, form of public education shows the parties really have got the internet business licked. IR35 and RIP - all is forgiven.
