Stockwatch Daily: Tech and chips gain in Nasdaq rise

Active trading of tech stocks pushed the Nasdaq towards overnight gains of 4.85 per cent, closing at 2,305.59 points.

NEWS As the market's most actively traded shares, Cisco gained more than 13 per cent and Sun Microsystems edged towards 15 per cent. Intel also saw gains following announcements yesterday by Compaq and Dell that the chip maker's new Xeon chip will boost processing speeds considerably over the Pentium III. It was up nearly four per cent. Gains were also felt by European counterparts. Chip maker STMicroelectronics was up 2.5 per cent during early trading this morning. On the new markets the FTSE TechMark was buoyant rising 1.9 per cent this morning while the Neuer Markt in Frankfurt gained 2.9 per cent.
