Stockwatch Daily: US gains lead the way

The US sneezes, Europe says 'bless you'...

NEWS Tech stocks opened strongly this morning after large rises on the Nasdaq exchange overnight. However, the good performance was not enough to boost the whole London Stock Exchange, dropping back 0.1 per cent on opening. By contrast the TechMark 100 rose 0.3 per cent out of the gate, reflecting rises for intelligent agent firm Autonomy, and online directory service Scoot.com. Germany reflected a similar pattern, with the mainstream DAX exchange down and the high-tech Neuer Markt up slightly. However, telecoms shares were depressed, with Vodafone, BT and Colt Telecom all feeling the pinch. This is despite large rises all over the tech sector yesterday in the US, where the Nasdaq gained 77 points, or 3.6 per cent on the day. Networking giant Cisco led the charge, up 9.2 per cent.
