NEWS Lord Weinstock, the founder of GEC, is reported to be considering three names in a search for a successor to current Marconi boss Lord Simpson. Simpson earlier this week received the full backing of Lord Weinstock in his bid to be re-elected at the head of the troubled company, but the Financial Times reports the search for his successor is already under way. The time scale for Simpson's replacement is not clear, but he is due to retire next July. The paper reports that Peter Gershon, head of the office of government commerce and former head of Marconi Electronic Systems while it was part of GEC, is one of the candidates, though the identities of the other two are not known. Lord Weinstock is a major shareholder in Marconi having stepped down as chief executive in 1996 and will carry a great deal of influence in the run up to the company's annual general meeting on 18 July at which Lord Simpson is hoping for re-election as CEO.
