BT may lose directory inquiries to competitors

Oftel to snatch lucrative 192 business from telco's clutches...

NEWS Oftel is looking to replace BT's 192 directory number with the choice of other codes from rival operators in an attempt to open up competition. The telecommunications watchdog sent letters to possible industry participants last week confirming plans to deregulate the £300m market in September, according to a report in today's Financial Times. BT, which currently makes a profit of between £20m to £30m a year by charging 40p a call, has been criticised for cutting customers off mid-conversation and not providing all the information required. However, BT defended its service and said adding more codes would only lead to customer confusion.
