Stockwatch Daily: Euro chip makers on the up

ARM, Infineon and Alcatel on the move...

NEWS European markets opened slightly weak this morning but computer chip and mobile equipment makers showed definite gains. The Paris CAC 40 opened up 0.5 per cent, with the FTSE adding 0.3 per cent. In Frankfurt the Dax was down 0.3 per cent STMicroelectronics rose 4.61 per cent to E38.77 (£23.84) after Merrill Lynch upgraded it to 'buy' from 'neutral'. Infineon rose on the back of the news, jumping 3.32 per cent with ARM Holdings also rising slightly. In the mobile sector Alcatel rose 2.65 per cent, Marconi was up 1.76 per cent and Nokia added 0.42 per cent.
